What is a mechanical combination lock?

A mechanical combination lock is a coded lock that requires a certain sequence of numbers to unlock it. Each number is on an individual dial, so they can be turned in the order required. These dials are connected to the internal locking mechanism, so when the correct combination is entered, the mechanism inside is disengaged. Locks are available in 3-wheel or 4-wheel configurations, with 4-digit locks offering up to 10,000 different combinations, making them ideal for a range of applications where security is paramount.

Where can mechanical combination locks be used?

As a keyless solution, there are many different applications where combination locks can be used, both personally and in industrial spaces.

  • Medical furniture In medical environments, keeping personal patient documents or medication secure is key. A mechanical combination lock offers security on a range of medical storage furniture, including cabinets, cupboards, and trolleys, to ensure only those who need to have access have access.
  • Office furniture If your employees need to keep their belongings safe, or there are important, sensitive documents that need to be secured, mechanical combination locks are ideal to give access to only those who are authorised.
  • Lockers For employees or students, combination locks offer a safe place to leave their personal possessions.

Choosing the right mechanical combination lock

The right mechanical combination lock depends on how the lock will be used and who will be using it. The two primary considerations are operating mode and feature requirements. Our range offers both private and public mode locks.

Public Mode Locks (shared locker environments)

Public mode locks are designed for shared environments where multiple users access the same locker or storage unit throughout the day. In public mode, the user sets their own code at the start of their session, and when the locker is opened and the lock is closed again, the code is automatically cleared, making the locker available for the next user. Public mode is the standard specification for settings like gyms, leisure centres, changing rooms, swimming pools, and any shared locker environment where a different user occupies the locker each session. Auto-scramble functionality is available on public mode locks, which automatically scrambles the dials when the lock opens, preventing the previous code from being visible to the next user.

Private Mode Locks (personal storage)

Private mode locks are designed for single-user applications where the same person accesses the locker repeatedly over an extended period. In private mode, the user sets their own code, and it stays the same until they choose to change it. Private mode is the standard specification for office pedestals, personal storage lockers, medical furniture, and any application where one individual has ongoing ownership of the storage space.

Master Key Override & Code Finder

For administrators managing a large number of locks, for example, a facilities manager overseeing a locker bank, the master key override functionality is an important feature to consider. Master key override allows authorised personnel to open any lock within the system, regardless of the current code, providing emergency or supervisory access when needed. A code finder function is also available on select models, allowing an administrator to identify the current code without having to reset the lock. This is particularly useful for auditing or retrieving codes on behalf of a user who has forgotten theirs.

Wet Area & Corrosion Resistance

Wet area and corrosion-resistant variants are available for locks placed in humid or chemically exposed environments, including swimming pools, spas, changing rooms, and healthcare settings where cleaning chemicals are regularly used. Why choose a mechanical combination lock?

In an environment where both mechanical and digital locking solutions are available and suitable, the choice between them is more a matter of specification preference than a quality comparison.
Mechanical combination locks have specific advantages that make them the right choice in certain contexts.

No power dependency

Mechanical combination locks require no batteries, no wiring, and no network connection. They open when the correct code is entered, regardless of what is happening to any surrounding infrastructure. For installations where power failure or connectivity issues would be operationally disruptive, such as outdoor enclosures, portable storage, and environments with unreliable power supply, mechanical locks offer operational reliability that electronic systems cannot always ensure.

Lower total cost of ownership

Without batteries to replace, electronics to maintain, or software to update, the ongoing cost of managing a mechanical combination lock installation is lower than an equivalent electronic system. For large locker banks where maintenance overhead is a budget consideration, this can be a meaningful difference over a 5-10 year installation lifetime.

Simple user operation

No app, no card, and no fob required; just a code the user sets themselves. For environments where users are unlikely to have a smartphone (industrial settings, changing rooms), or where the ease of a code is preferred to the complexity of an RFID or NFC system, mechanical locks provide a simple and effective experience.

Retrofitting compatibility

Mechanical combination locks are available in standard sizes compatible with existing locker cut-outs, making them a practical solution for upgrading an existing keyed or padlock-based locker bank without replacing the lockers themselves. A common application is for facilities managers looking to remove the administrative overhead of key management without the cost of a full locker replacement.

For applications requiring audit trails, remote management, self-service booking, or integration with access control systems, our digital combination lock and RFID ranges offer these capabilities alongside the same quality of manufacture.

Frequently Asked Questions

Public mode locks reset after each use. The user sets a code when they lock up, and the code is cleared when the locker is opened, making it available for the next person. This is a popular specification for gyms, leisure centres, changing rooms, and any shared locker environment. Private mode locks keep the same code until the user chooses to change it. This is the right choice for office lockers, personal storage, and medical furniture where the same person accesses the same locker repeatedly over time.
