Choosing the right furniture lock for your application

The right choice depends on the type of furniture, the movement of the locking point, and the level of security needed. Here’s a breakdown of some common furniture lock types.

Pedestal locks

Pedestal locks are designed for under-desk storage units and mobile pedestals. Standard pedestal locks suit most applications, while anti-tilt pedestal locks prevent drawers from being pulled out simultaneously, which is a safety requirement for many office furniture specifications, particularly for multi-drawer units. For added convenience, multi-drawer locks secure multiple drawers with a single key action, locking all drawers in the unit at once. This feature is especially useful for filing cabinets and storage units where access needs to be controlled at the unit level rather than drawer by drawer. Slim file lock variants are also available for shallower drawer configurations.

Tambour locks

Tambour locks are ideal for tambour door units, the sliding or rolling door mechanisms common on office credenzas and storage walls. These locks engage with the tambour track to prevent the door from being opened, and are available in cylindrical screw-fixing variants for different panel thicknesses and cam configurations.

Latch locks

Latch locks combine the lock and handle into a single component, allowing furniture to be opened and closed while remaining secure. They are widely used on locker doors, personal storage units, and office furniture.

Espagnolette & multi-point locks

For taller cabinet doors, espagnolette locks and multi-point locks provide greater security and structural rigidity by securing a door at multiple points (the top, bottom, and centre of the frame). Espagnolette locks use a rod mechanism operated by a single key turn, while multi-point locks function similarly but may use different rod configurations depending on the door’s geometry.

Furniture locks for healthcare and medical applications

Secure storage is not only a preference in clinical environments, but it’s a key requirement for compliance reasons. From pharmacy trolleys and medicine cabinets to patient bedside storage and medical records cupboards, the specification requirements for furniture locks in healthcare settings differ significantly from standard office applications. Lowe & Fletcher supplies furniture locks to healthcare facilities, hospital procurement teams, and medical furniture manufacturers across the UK. Our locks are suitable for hospital bedside lockers, drug and medicine trolleys, medicine cabinets, medical records storage, and personal storage cupboards for staff and visitors.

Keying requirements for healthcare vary more than almost any other sector we supply into, and there isn’t a single standard specification. The vast majority of our locks can be supplied to differ, though a small number of formats, including our mini camlocks, aren’t available with master keying. Beyond that, the right approach depends entirely on the facility: bedside furniture on a single ward is often keyed to differ with a master key covering the ward, and larger sites sometimes need a sub-mastering structure with an overall master above that. Trolleys, by contrast, are sometimes keyed alike across a whole department rather than differed individually. Some NHS trusts also specify a particular security certification for drug trolley locks specifically, which we can advise on where required.

Given how much this varies by trust and by application, we’d always recommend telling us your requirement rather than assuming a standard specification. Get in touch with your ward, department or facility structure, and we’ll advise on the right keying approach.

For medical furniture manufacturers integrating locks into new product lines, we can provide Computer-Aided Design (CAD) models to support the design and production process. You can find a wide range of CAD files in our Downloads section. Simply contact our technical team with your application brief.
