Key features of camlocks

Camlocks consist of a base unit (the housing and barrel) with a cam attached. Operating the lock moves the cam to open and close the lock. This category contains a range of disc tumbler camlocks, security cam locks, high-security cam locks, water-resistant camlocks, and tool or coin-operated camlocks.

  • Mini camlocks Mini camlocks work in the same way as a full-sized camlock but are designed for applications where space is limited.
  • Slamlocks Slamlocks are a range of camlocks that automatically lock when closed or slammed shut, hence slamlock.
  • Water-resistant camlocks Some of our camlocks are IP65 rated, making them ideal for use on outdoor applications such as Enclosures and Postal.
  • Wide variety of options Our range of cam locks comes with different head shapes and sizes and a wide variety of other options including standard movements, lock combinations, lock finish and fixing hole shape. As established cam lock suppliers, we can accommodate standard and bespoke requirements.

How to Specify a Camlock

Every camlock specification ultimately comes down to four key decisions: body length (how deep the lock body needs to be to fit through the panel), key series/combinations, cam type, and finish.

Body length

The body length is measured from the base of the lock head to the cam fixing point. This length must either exactly match the panel thickness of your application or be slightly longer. If it’s too short, it won’t reach through entirely, but if it’s a bit longer, it’ll simply stick out. Body lengths in our range begin at 6mm and extend to accommodate thicker panels. If your panel falls outside of standard measurements, you can reach out to us, and we can manufacture to your exact measurements.

Key series & combinations

Key series is determined by the product type rather than something you need to specify directly. For key-operated locks, it defines the key profile: the physical shape that determines which locks a key can enter. What you do need to specify is key movement, which determines how far the key turns to lock and unlock.

Combinations refer to the number of unique keys available within a given series. A higher combinations count reduces the likelihood of two locks in an installation sharing the same key, which is important in larger deployments where key uniqueness matters. The right combinations count depends on the size of your installation and the level of key control your application requires.

Use the filters above to explore the range by key series and combinations, or see our guide to product order codes if you already know what you need. Contact our technical team if you need help selecting the right specification for your application.

Cam Types

Cam type refers to the shape of the locking bar or arm on the back of the lock: straight, 45° cranked or 90° cranked, with notching available on either edge. The right cam depends on your panel geometry and mounting position. See our

Lock Types

The lock type determines the mechanism and security level that best suits your application.

  • Standard camlocks cover the majority of industrial and commercial requirements.
  • Mini camlocks work identically but are designed for panels where space is limited.
  • Slamlocks engage automatically on closing (no key action required to lock), making them suitable for high-throughput environments.
Coin-operated and tool-operated variants remove the need for a key entirely, operated instead by a coin, token or screwdriver.
  • Where the installation is exposed to moisture, water or outdoor conditions, water-resistant camlocks are available with IP65 certification.
  • For applications where picking resistance is a priority, pin tumbler and 9-pin pick-resistant camlocks, commonly known as pin tumbler locks or radial pin tumbler locks (RPTs), provide a significantly higher level of protection than a standard disc tumbler mechanism.
  • UGL (Upper Grade Lock) variants offer a higher combinations count for installations where key uniqueness across a large number of locks is essential.

Finish

Finish options include bright chrome, satin chrome, nickel and zinc-plated variants, depending on the environment and aesthetic requirements. Black, black chrome and epoxy finishes are also available for specific applications. For outdoor, wet-area, or chemically exposed installations, corrosion-resistant finishes and IP65-rated camlocks are available.

Camlocks for Your Industry

Camlocks are found in almost every industrial and commercial sector, and the specification significantly depends on the environment, the security level required, and the volume of daily use.

Lockers and personal storage

The most common camlock application.

Standard disc tumbler camlocks are typically the default choice for schools, gyms, workplaces, and public lockers because of their simple-to-use mechanism. That said, high-differ configurations and master key systems are also available for managed locker environments where key control is important.

Enclosures and electrical panels

Water-resistant IP65-rated camlocks, quarter-turn tool-operated locks, and slamlocks are all widely used on electrical enclosures, meter boxes, server racks, and outdoor cabinets. The material and finish specification of the camlock is typically driven by the IP rating required and the environment (outdoor, chemical-exposure or washdown installations each have distinct requirements).

Postal and parcel

Camlocks are also commonly used on mailboxes, parcel boxes, and drop boxes across residential, commercial, and industrial postal applications. High-differ camlocks with a single master key for the installer or facilities manager are the standard specification for managed postal systems.

Automotive and vehicle accessories

Push-to-operate and quarter-turn tool camlocks are used across a wide range of vehicle accessory applications, including tonneau covers, toolboxes, roof storage, and automotive panels. Cam angle, body depth, and corrosion resistance are the key specification parameters for these applications.

OEM and bespoke requirements

Where a standard camlock will not fit your application, we manufacture to specification. Custom body lengths, cam profiles, key series, and finishes can all be produced to your specific brief. Bespoke tooling is also available for volume OEM customers.

Frequently Asked Questions

A camlock consists of two main parts: a cylinder (body and barrel) and a cam. When the correct key is inserted and turned, it rotates the barrel, which in turn moves the cam from the locked to the unlocked position. In a locked position, the cam sits behind the door or panel frame, preventing it from opening. When unlocked, the cam rotates clear of the frame, allowing access. The mechanism is compact, reliable, and suitable for a very wide range of panel thicknesses and applications.
